What is Movember and why do I do it?

The end of November is almost here, I have written a lot of IT related posts this one is a little different.

This is the second year I have participated in Movember, which is an annual event to help raise money and awareness for men’s health issues by growing facial hair. Admittedly my face is a patchy mess of face pubes it takes me 2 months easily to grow a legit beard, but I have tried, as you can see.

According to the CDC in 2012  (the most recent year numbers are available)

  • 177,489 men in the United States were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • 27,244 men in the United States died from prostate cancer.

My father was one of the men who was diagnosed that year, it was caught early and with a round of radiation treatments he is thankfully in remission. That is why I participate in Movember, to help raise awareness, and let people know they should get tested. No that process is not fun, and like many of you fellas reading this I also avoid the doctor like a plague ship on the high seas, but this is important.

This is more of a request to you, please donate to either my campaign for GeekStaches or to someone you know, or to the Movember charity in general, and please get tested. Thanks to all those that have already donated and stay healthy.
